Nerve Movie Review

Nerve is about an online dare game, in which people give participants anonymous dares for money. The participants compete with each other to win the grand prize as the dares get tougher. Things get worse when the tasks get increasingly dangerous and lives are at stake.
I didn’t know what to expect from Nerve. I mean, I knew it was based on a novel but the only thing I knew about the novel was that it has a lot of mixed reviews. Still, I enjoyed this movie a little more than I thought I would.
I suppose one could compare it to similar movies such as The Hunger Games but in truth… it’s more like a postmodern Roman gladiator games with a lot of social media influence.
Emma Roberts and Dave Franco give fairly decent performances as Vee and Ian, the game’s newest popular couple. Their dares start out pretty simple but eventually become much more risky and lethal. I won’t give away too many details but there are some very interesting twists and turns. I was also really surprised by the ending.
If you like suspenseful movies that highlight the pitfalls of social media then you might enjoy watching Nerve.

Silver Linings Playbook Movie Review

After losing his job and wife, and spending time in a mental institution, Pat Solatano (Bradley Cooper) winds up living with his parents (Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver). He wants to rebuild his life and reunite with his wife, but his parents would be happy if he just shared their obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles. Things get complicated when Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), who offers to help him reconnect with his wife, if he will do something very important for her in exchange.
Silver Linings Playbook is definitely one of my all time favorite movies! It’s also one of my favorite Jennifer Lawrence movies. She gives such an intriguing and multilayered performance throughout that it makes one believe she actually suffers from some kind of mental illness.
The rest of the cast is also really great and the story is very well written. I feel it accurately touches upon the lives of those living with mental disorders.
On a scale of 1 tamale to 10 I give Silver Linings Playbook a tasty 9 tamales! 😎

Passengers Movie Review

On a routine journey through space to a new home, two passengers, sleeping in suspended animation, are awakened 90 years too early when their ship malfunctions. As Jim and Aurora face living the rest of their lives on board, with every luxury they could ever ask for, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction… until they discover the ship is in grave danger. With the lives of 5000 sleeping passengers at stake, only Jim and Aurora can save them all.
Passengers was not what I expected it to be but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt give strong performances throughout the movie. Though, their onscreen chemistry does tend to stagnate during certain scenes.
Nevertheless, the story is very well written and quite intriguing. The CGI effects alone make this movie worth watching. It also poses a good question… If given the choice between sleeping for 120 years or living out the rest of your life on a ship with Jennifer Lawrence which would you choose?
I must admit I would definitely choose the latter.
If you like scifi movies with a strong romance element then I recommend watching Passengers.

Swiss Army Man Movie Review

Hank is stranded on a deserted island, having given up all hope of ever making it home again. But one day everything changes when a corpse named Manny washes up on shore; the two become fast friends, and ultimately go on an epic adventure that will bring Hank back to the woman of his dreams.
Swiss Army Man is unlike any other movie I’ve seen before! The best way I can describe it without giving away too many details is Castaway meets Weekend At Bernie’s. But even that is too much of an oversimplification.
The story is very well written and both Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe give very powerful performances. Their on-screen chemistry is just too awesome to ignore!
If you like movies that can make you laugh, cry, and cheer then I highly recommend watching Swiss Army Man!
On a scale of 1 tamale to 10 tamales I give it 9.5 tamales! 😎
